Many of these German names are now exonyms, but used to be endonyms commonly used by the local German population, which was invited into the less-populated regions as colonists by Czech rulers and lived in many of these places from the early modern period until after World War II. Some German place names were often Germanised versions of the original Czech/Slavic names, as seen e.g. from their pronunciation, while some of the new Czech place names had to be found/created after the transfer of majority of the German population following the World War II, since there was no traditional Czech/Slavic name for the place.
